Best Photo Spots in Joshua Tree National Park

You’ve decided to have your upcoming photoshoot in one of the downright coolest locations on the planet- Joshua Tree National Park. 

When I think of epic photoshoot locations for any occasion, Joshua Tree has to be near the top of that list every time. If you’re envisioning a gallery full of colorful painted sunsets, sweeping desert landscapes, and towering red rocks with you and your lover at the center, there truly isn’t another place like it. But with over 1,200 square miles of breathtaking terrain, it might feel impossible to choose the right locations. Luckily, I’m here to share the best photo spots in Joshua Tree National Park– so be sure to save this post for later!

Hemingway Buttress

A popular climbing destination and one of the park’s most epic 180 degree boulder views, Hemingway Buttress is the ideal spot for that iconic desert aesthetic. Plus, there’s a less-trafficked path nearby lined with Joshua Trees- obviously a must-have shot for this location. Nearby is Sheep’s Pass Campground with views of the rock formations if you want to end your session with a night camping under the stars. Just saying 😉

Keys View Point

Honestly what doesn’t this location have- stunning views of the Salton Sea and Coachella Valley, and of course the unparalleled sunset view. Not to mention, the Joshua Tree landscape and desert brush make for some seriously gorgeous photos. And since it’s the highest point in the park, you’ll get sweeping, panoramic views of all the mesas, mountains and valleys. If you’re lucky and head out on a clear day, you’ll be able to see Mexico’s Signal Mountain – a super rare sighting!

Barker Dam Nature Trail

Quintessential Joshua Tree. Paths lined by desert foliage, rock formations, and of course, the Joshua trees themselves. On a clear day the sky is a vivid blue, but the colors are equally as beautiful at sunset. This spot also has nearby parking access and restrooms, making it the perfect spot to do an outfit change or freshen up after shooting at our other locations. If you adventure far enough along the trail, you’ll stumble upon a giant lake that many don’t even know exists inside the desert park.

Cholla Cactus Garden

This spot is exactly how you’d picture it and yes, it is as adorable as it sounds. The sea of fuzzy cactus almost looked like they were placed in a perfect patch among the desert landscape. One of the dreamiest and best photo spots in Joshua Tree National Park. If you wait until sunset, the light between the cactus branches makes it look like the whole garden is glowing. But be careful, while teddy bear-like, they are sharp and have attachment issues (I’ve pulled out quite a few needles from my ankles over the years).
