Mixed Modern Wedding Decorations For Your Reception

Planning a wedding has many moving parts, but nothing sets the scene like your decor does. Some of my favorite weddings to photograph have a mixed modern or eclectic vibe. I’ve been so lucky that this style has been super popular with my couple’s this year. Mixed modern basically means modern design mixed with any style your heart desires to give you a super personal vibe, yet keeping the core of it clean and sleek. So how do you plan mixed modern wedding decorations for your reception? Allow me to help!

Color Palette

One of the best ways to display mixed modern wedding decorations for your reception is to get bold with your color palette. The key is mixing bright colors with neutrals to really round out the whole spectrum while allowing your personality to shine through. We immediately notice when colors compliment each other. Colors also make us feel a certain type of way. Determine how you want your reception to feel and base your color choices off that.

Chloe and Peter’s wedding (pictured below) has a great mix of bright and light colors because they wanted to bring in a desert vibe mixed with their bubbly personalities. It’s lively and fun with bold pops of bright orangey-yellows and bright pinks. In contrast, they had a soft, romantic touch with the deep red in the florals, light beiges, and gold finishes. I think it translated super well into the vibe of the party because though it was a super romantic affair (obviously), it was so lively, full of dancing, laughing and personality.

Funky Details

Another way to really mix up your design choices is implementing funky patterns and textures. One way this is done is selecting a venue that is unique. Your venue can really change the vibe of your wedding so selecting one that is going to add to the style is not only a great choice but can also make for some insanely fun photos.

For Olivia and Adam (pictured below), we went all out at the Villa Royale boutique hotel in Palm Springs. This venue really kicked their wedding style into high gear. They have the most incredible Moroccan tile work running through the whole venue. In the same fashion, the jewel-toned, velvet furniture and bold custom art lining the walls lent itself so well to curating an exciting space. If the venue you have chosen is more eclectic and interesting, you want your wedding decorations for your reception to stay on a more neutral side to allow everything to have its own space. Olivia and Adam chose to keep all the florals and tablecloths white, and clear acrylic chairs with glass vases for the table settings. This really allowed the pops of color to shine through in the velvet furniture, and rugs making this a perfect mixed modern wedding.

A Subtle Theme

Now, I usually say be “ inspired by” instead of giving your wedding a “theme” but you get my point. Having an idea to base your wedding decorations for your reception around will definitely make things easier by giving the process a clear direction. For Lauren and Niles’ special day (pictured below), they wanted their love story to play a part in the design and overall style. They met at Coachella so they decided to do a Coachella-inspired wedding with the Coachella mountains as their ceremony backdrop of course! Similarly, all of the bridesmaids wore floral patterned dresses instead of “flower crowns” to make it a little more subtle.

They continued this throughout the reception by creating little pockets dedicated to the feeling of being at a music festival in order to recreate the energy and environment in which they met. They had actual custom wristbands as escort cards. Each table was labeled after a musician or band, and even the dinner menu was sectioned off between “opening acts” and “headliners” as the courses. All of these subtle moments made for such unique and personal style choices that really reflected in the way everyone celebrated. This paired with a light and airy color palette and the calm desert oasis they selected for their venue really helped to keep the “modern” part of the design true.

Closing Thoughts

Like I mentioned, having mixed modern wedding decorations for your reception really just means inserting your personality into modern design. It’s easy to achieve and almost always makes for a super unique wedding. Your guests will feel right at home because it’s a reflection of you!
